Unpopular opinion: I did not love this book. It was an awfully slow start for the first half. The second half was more interesting, but still felt pretty one dimensional. There was too much telling, not a lot of showing. In addition, the writing style is way too Faulkner-esque which I cannot stand. Long rambly sentences. No differentiation in dialogue. Ugh!
This is a story about an aging gentleman in the Wild West. Captain Kidd travels from town to town reading the townsfolk the “news of the world” from various newspapers. It’s a bargain for 10 cents a head.
During his travels, the Captain is paid a handsome sum to return a rescued captive from the Kiowa Tribe. Johanna is 10 years old and has been living with the Kiowa since they killed her parents and kidnapped her at the age of six. She has no memory of her pre-Kiowa life. Captain Kidd and Johanna form a special bond as they travel through the wilds of Texas, encountering all manner of obstacles in their path.
The relationship between Johanna and Captain Kidd is touching and easily the best part of the book. All of the events that took place though were over much too quickly and it felt like reading a news article rather than a novel. Maybe that was the point given the title and Captain Kidd’s career of choice, but it didn’t work for me. The characters and story could have been significantly more developed.

3.5 stars. Captain Kidd's character was written very well. The relationship between him and Johanna is one I won't forget.
I don’t normally enjoy westerns but this was a lovely little book with that transcends genre. The audible is also very well done.
Paulette Jiles is an artist. She paints with words and tells a compelling story. Loved this book!

Reads like a YA. A sweet story but the characters were not fleshed out enough. The ending tries to solve everything in a hurry.
