i’ve gone back and forth on what to make of this book; on one hand, it’s beautifully written, (seems) historically accurate, and the relationship between johanna and the captain is so sweet. on the other hand, it felt quite slow and tedious until The Big Fight, and the portrayal of Native American tribes as savage and violent feels very reductive and unnecessary. even if it’s accurate to the historical perspectives from white society at the time, do we really need another piece of media to enforce those stereotypes? all’s to say, it is still an interesting and unique exploration of what white child captives of Native tribes experienced, reflecting a broader and more universal theme of what it means to search for a place of belonging, with a wild western adventure backdrop. listen to the audio version fs tho, coz idk why the author ignores the basic grammar rule of quotation marks and gardner does a fantastic job with the myriad of voices.

Enjoyed this one. It wasn't necessarily a "couldn't put it down" and the pacing felt a little low on places. But I loved all the Texas history and places, felt like home.
