Berättartonen är otrolig och jag gillar verkligen Kincaids språk. Det finns nästan ingen plot men gott om skarpa betraktelser om tillvaron, lika giltiga än idag.

Som den här iakttagelsen:
“She had too much of everything, and so she longed to have less; less, she was sure, would bring her happiness. To me it was a laugh and a relief to observe the unhappiness that too much can bring; I had been so used to observing the results of too little.”

Vilken också påminner mig om projektet många i min omgivning håller på med: äga och köpa så lite saker som möjligt. Rensa ut, skala ner, declutter. För det känns inte som en slump att det nästan alltid är övre medelklassen som håller på med detta.
Skulle gärna vilja läsa om den i framtiden, och då verkligen läsa istället för att lyssna som jag gjorde nu.

A coming-of-age story about an immigrant au pair, Lucy tells the story of someone who is coming into herself, her identity and where she belongs in the world.

My first Kincaid, but certainly not my last! Absolutely beautifully done - bold and original in the face of a story that felt so familiar. I am desperate for more.

This didn't especially speak to me, although there were some strong moments. I had heard it was connected to Villette which is one of my all-time favorites, so maybe my expectations were too high.
