I totally get the hype. I also get why people say this is loosely based on beauty and the beast, but I kinda loved that.

I had been avoiding this book because all the hype it was getting. I was like, Twilight got this much attention and wasn't great, so i was being stubborn.

I was wrong. This book was a retelling of the myth of Tamlin, with a bit of Beauty and the Beast for flavor. It is amazingly well written, compelling, and entertaining. If you liked Holly Black's Far books, you will like this one.  I started this book at midnight last night, fell asleep while reading it, and jumped right back in on waking.

Feyre is a strong female lead, who is disinclined to taking anyone's crap due to being the only thing seemingly keeping her family from starving in the years before the story starts. She is dealing with realistic dangers for her environment, and the care she has for her family shines through. Tamlin is a pretty male lead, but I did find the other male characters a bit more interesting. Tamlin is dealing with his own problems mostly, and the need for secrecy does drag on the plot a bit.  The only real downside I saw, was the leads falling in love felt rushed. She did a lot of character and world building in the beginning, stuffed them falling in love in the middle, and that made the driving force behind Feyre's decisions seem a bit hollow. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series though.

Too slow and hard to follow unless you devote all of your attention to it. Set it down for months before picking it up just so I could say I finished it.

Could have cut out almost a third of the book and still had the same story. I won't go on in the series, it was too slow

Very entertaining! I feel like people really hyped the smut in this book, and there was a little, but it was mainly fantasy plot driven with lots of political drama. The main character was irritating to me at first, but she's growing on me. I really liked it and I'm excited for the next one!

I usually review immediately after finishing a book, but 24 hours later I still can't decide if I loved or hated this book. I think there are a lot of pro and cons.

As many have mentioned, the writing is juvenile, the story has been done many times before, and there are some problematic ideas. Many of these characters start out as obnoxious tropes, but I find throughout the story they become less and less over the top. While I would describe this book overall as junk food, I do keep catching myself thinking about it. It is cringe and cheesy, but I think readers need to remind themselves that it is a romance first, fantasy second. Despite that fact, I find myself intrigued with the fae world and more invested than I ever thought I would be. Many moments (not necessarily romantic/sexy ones) caught me off guard emotionally. Specifically,
when the blue fairy dies after having his wings ripped off and Fayre holds his hand as he dies
as an example. It was the first time in the novel that I truly felt this story was trying to dive into something bigger than sexy fantasies.

Speaking of sexy, it doesn't even get that crazy. I'm don't know why it is described as so spicy, but I found the sex scenes about as interesting as Fifty Shades of Gray....so not great.

Overall, not sure why this book is so hyped up, but I really enjoyed parts of it. With as many books as this author has written, I feel like her writing should have improved a bit by now lol. If you regularly read fantasy and supernatural fanfiction online, this "real" book is for you!
