It’s really just not for me.

The writing had moments of hope but was overall pretty poor. I don’t usually read this kind of fiction so if you like it good for you, but there were moments where I was bored of reading about Feyre wandering around the grounds and painting for a few chapters. “He was enormous-the size of a pony” did give me a good laugh though.

Feyre herself was quite uninspired in my opinion, she likes to paint and has to hunt, other than her family dynamic I don’t know what else I can say about her. Maybe this was done so that women could see themselves in her? I don’t know how to explain it but I just couldn’t

I think the ending of our main character, Feyre becoming high fae just sealed the fact I won’t be reading any further into the series. One thing I enjoyed about the book was the fact that she was human, I liked the fact she had weaknesses and the fact that she hated fae was at least a little bit intriguing and kept the enemies to lovers up. Now she’s one of their kind, it just feels even more bland.

I didn’t hate the romance! I thought it was quite nice to begin with to see them soften up to each other but I don’t like the “do as your told” dynamic that much and it felt a little too much at times where consent wasn’t really implied? Although I might be reading too much into that, it still didn’t feel great.

Which brings me onto Rhys or whatever the long version of his name is. He drugged and SA’d her I simply do not care that we are supposed to see him as a “good guy” I hate him. I hate him. She didn’t even want to kiss him and the book makes that clear.I can see where this is going with a stupid love triangle and quite frankly I don’t want to see that.

Sorry if you love this book but it’s a no from me.

I wouldn't say this was the most amazing book I've read, but I don't think that's the point. It was fun and it ended in enough of a cliffhanger for me to want to read the second one! Moreover, I definitely recommend reading this with a buddy or in a book club. I read it with my long-distance best friend and it made the process hilarious and gave us something fun to do! To me, this book (especially the first half) read as a Beauty and the Beast retelling. Moreover, I think there were random--and too many-- similarities between the faeries in this book and vampires in other pop culture. That being said, my favorite depiction of the faeries were the creepy, scary ones...I enjoyed the faerie diversity! I just wish they were more unique than paranormal love interests that we've already experienced elsewhere.

Also, why is the main character's name Feyre if she's human and the human race (including her family) hate fairies? Asking the real questions...

Despite not being my usual choice of book, this has reignited my passion for reading. I couldn’t wait to pick it up again to find out more about the world, the dynamics and the outcomes of decisions. Although I did find some of the choices and writing questionable at points, the world building and character growth and development made it a worthwhile read! I can see why this book has so much hype around it and have immediately picked up the next!

Maybe I’m just not an ACOTAR girlie. But reading a bad book isn’t as gut wrenching, as being disappointed in a book with much potential. I should have thoroughly enjoyed this novel, as someone who loves fantasy, curses, fairy tale retellings, and hidden worlds beyond the human realm. Maybe I started reading this book when the series has been so hyped, such that my expectations were too high. But the writing (forever will I be haunted by the description of the sky as “periwinkle” with splashes of “magenta and pumpkin”—and not in a good way), character development, and pacing made this story not as engrossing as I had hoped. While Maas likely wanted to spend a good chunk of the book devoted to Feyre and Tamlin’s developing romance and Feyre’s “growth,” I did not buy their love too much and I found myself let down that the most interesting part of the novel and actual lore/world building occurred in the last 30% of the novel (I get that Tamlin + his court wasn’t able to tell Feyre the truth but still… ugh). I did hear the second book is the best one in the series, so I will return to give ACOTAR another chance again—I just might need a pause.
