Well, I pretty much hated this. It started off okay and I quite liked the world building, but that was about all I enjoyed. The writing was sooo repetitive — Maas relies on the same few words, phrases and sentence structures to the point it was just irritating. I also didn't really care for any of the characters and found Feyre an annoying narrator, which was exacerbated by the repetitiveness of the writing (WE GET IT, FEYRE THINKS ABOUT LIGHT AND COLOURS BECAUSE SHE'S A PAINTER.)
I did find myself reading it fairly quickly, so I suppose it gets points for that, but it was mostly with an attitude of wanting to get it over with.

A deep dive into a fictional world full of faeries and magic. Enjoyed this re-read of a world which is both loveable and a world to loathe as well. Didn't get the full four stars for me, due to some questionable plot points, and somewhat glossing over of Stockholm Syndrome essentially, but none the less enjoyable.

Took me a while to get into it but midday and I got hooked. Finished the second half in about a day.

If you told me that SJMAAS hates this main character, I would believe you. I've never seen so much gaslighting and victim-blaming towards a character as was done to Feyre. None of them deserves her. Not her family and definitely not Tamlin (I'll probably change my mind later, this is just the first book).

The story drags on in the first half of the book, but then it becomes so engaging that it is worth it. Amarantha is such a great villain!

I loved all of this. I can't wait for the next book - 4 stars!

It's neither as bad nor as good as I've heard people say.

Don't get me wrong, it is bad. It's got terrible pacing, it's horribly repetitive, the main character is thoroughly unlikeable, and the writing itself is poor (odd word choice, run-on sentences, grammatical sloppiness, trope-y refrains...). However, you'd thinking it was the end of literature from how some people talk about it.

All in all, a very mid, unimpressive book, not nearly deserving its huge fanbase, but if you're in the mood for schlocky, "dark" fantasy romance, you'll probably enjoy it.

Honestly, less annoying than Fourth Wing.

I think the trick to this book is to avoid inserting yourself. You are just an observer, along for the ride. Don’t get attached to anyone. She’s just some idiot, and stuff happens to her, and that stuff is crazy weird.

Also she definitely shat her pants in front of everyone.

Tamlin is such a bore. The fact that most of the fae-ness is hidden until about 60% of the way through the book made it a slog. I almost dnf-ed this book for a second time but pushed through with the power of liveblogging my frustrations to a friend. Thankfully the last 15% was actually enjoyable largely because tamlin wasnt in it much

The only thing thats carrying me forward into the next book is knowing that
tamlin/feyre isn't endgame
