This book has been on my TBR for years and I was excited to finally read it. Bookstagram told me it would be good, but I feel lied to. It read like a mashup of Beauty and the Beast and Howl’s Moving Castle—two stories I love—but I didn’t love this. I didn’t like any of the characters and the story was just… blah. It was slow, I didn’t really care about what happened to any of the characters, and I predicted the plot twist close to the end.

All that being said, friends and family have assured me the series gets better as you go along, so I’ll give the second book a try. The jump from 400 pages to 600 makes me nervous it will be a giant waste of time, but hopefully I will like Mist and Fury better.

ACOTAR gets 2.5/5 for me, but I did finish and I am willing to give the second book a chance.

I enjoyed this, it was fun to finally read what everyone else has been reading. A few reasons for my low ish rating are: I found Feyre a bit annoying,
I didn’t quite understand how she and Tamlin fell in love  I guess and it didn’t feel super well conveyed to me. Like for example when they first said ily to each other I felt a bit shocked.
My main complaint of this book is that it didn’t feel fast paced enough for 416 pages. I know I’m new to fantasy, but I hoped it would have been more of a page turner based on how much people love the series (although I have heard many say the first book isn’t great, but that the rest of the series is, so I’ll definitely read the second one). It was overall a really well written and interesting story, just not in a page-turner type of way. I think if I connected with/ liked the characters more I would have read it a lot more quickly. ALSO while I think I’ll like the next book, I am completely overwhelmed by this series. The second book being 626 pages and then only increasing feels insane to me😭

The first 70% of the book was... quite bad and slow. Then the last 30%, although rushed and requiring a bit of an infodump from one of the characters, was pretty good, written in an earnest fairytale-like manner, with an almost jarring tone shift. That, and the fact that I'm not the target audience for the book, made me give it a generous 3 stars.

Oof brutal read - I had to grit my teeth to get through this one so I could feel a part of the hype but oh my lord talk about a Mary Sue fantasy story. I was pretty down with the plot and the forbidden romance through the first half of the book, but the whole second half threw me for a loop and I could not wrap my mind around any of the character’s motivations.

My friend said the second book and the rest of the series is better. Thankfully the second audiobook is available on Libby to rent immediately!

Feyre entering the world of Fae and learning about after giving up everything to save her family. The world building done just right and you know their surroundings from the first page.
I couldn’t give it a 5/5 because her visit home just felt rushed but it could just be how I read it.
The time under mountain was morbid at times and challenging but the depth this part of the story cannot be faulted.

I liked this book more than I thought I would - I hate the term romantasy, which seems to be a thing now - I'm happy to have some romance in my fantasy, but not fantasy in my romance, and this trod a fine line, but kept me hooked. The world-building is very good, and the characters each have a solidly different voice. It does, however, have a few points that drag, and then a lot seems to be packed in at the end. I got this copy free, but would consider buying more in the series.
