Oh boy, so many things to say here. First of all, this was the first series in over 10 years that I DNF'd (never got past the first book). The writing is mediocre at best, the descriptions are trite and cliche, and it reads like fanfiction written by a middle-schooler. The main character, Feyre, is whiny, unlikable, and overall bland and annoying, she reads like a textbook self-insert mary sue who is the best at everything, except being girly because she's "not like other girls". The plot makes no real sense, and the story takes forever to move forward, usually with more focus on the smutty romance bits than the actual storyline. This story has just taken Katniss from the Hunger Games, poorly reskinned her, and dumped her in a wannabe dark and raunchy beauty and the beast ripoff. I could maybe see how it could be enjoyable for a horned up middle schooler/ early high schooler, but this book is not for anyone who wants actual substance to their stories.

Maybe 2.5 stars would be more accurate than just a 2 star?? I mean it was boring at first it but then it got pretty good by the end, I didn't care about the characters that much but gosh did I hate Rhysand, not sure why anyone would like him when he's literally awful, the villain was evil too but her evilness felt cartoonish, not sure if I like that or not tbh. The romance didn't make that much sense to me, like why did Feyre and Tamlin even fell for each other ??? I didn't get it, so yeah idk what to feel about this book really but then again it's better than I was expecting so... That's good I guess

tbh i actually haven`t read this, but i watched cari can read`s plot summary on youtube and i now consider this read because i have no shame

i will not rate the book tho, but the video was a 6/5 at least

Update 30.01.23:

still haven't read this, but this time I listened to an audio book on youtube (the reading hag returns) which was absolutely amazingly made (6/5 stars for sure) and definitely an experience to say the least.

however, if it wasn't for that, I'd probably have dnf'd this, because the beginning was just so slow and Feyre is kind of really annoying, naive and also a bit dumb tbh. The story overall was just mediocre I guess and so was the writing. I did cringe a few times as well and both Tamlin and whatever the bat boys name was made me uncomfortable more than once (why were there so many sexual assault scences? why was one of them supposed to be romantik?)

also I think if I were to hear the words "utterly", "lethal" or "(there was one more I can't think of right now)" ever again I will spontaneously combust

2/5 or 2.5/5 maybe???? (can't really decide right now)

For an avid reader, the tropes that seem evident in this first book do not continue throughout the series. This book gave me tons of Twilight vibes which made me very uncomfortable, but that dynamic changes as the series continues! Keep reading!!

I have never been more grateful for a book for the lone purpose of the protagonist being 19. She was realistic in how she viewed the world without being obnoxious or helpless to fate. I appreciate her for this.

<spoilers>I'd also like to say I'm proud of myself for figuring out the answer to the riddle quite quickly. It was easy because of the common themes in the book and how the Antagonist centered all of her actions around one thing. Riddles often have simple answers. The writing and foreshadowing in the first three quarters of the book really helped to make the answer obvious to the reader(in my opinion).<spoilers>
