Initially the story kind of meandered through events that don’t seem to have much value to a storyline. Everything does tie in an intricate plot that even extends past its own series. As things develop it becomes quite chaotic and confusing but it is good. You get sucked into the story and into feyre. You must know what happens next even though it breaks her and it breaks you.

I love Lucien first off, best character of the entire series. The sass and the red hair is just a plus. He’s so selfless. I love him way too much. And I love Rhysand , he’s sassy and brutally honest. Plus he sounds incredibly hot. Tamlin is great ofc, love that blond boy

Edit: This was before I read the second book!!!
Screw Tamlin

I really enjoyed this! I had tried to start it two or three times before and ended up DNFing, but I was determined because the bookstagram hype was real and the FOMO was major haha. Even though StoryGraph has it labeled as medium-paced, it felt slower just because I couldn't go too fast for fear of missing out on lovely imagery, important character development, and necessary world-building. It definitely wasn't for lack of quality, and I wasn't opposed to taking my time soaking it all up.

I've heard that the series really gets good after the first book, and I can see that because it wasn't quite a five-star read for me but I also feel like the storyline and development were necessary. And without mentioning any spoilers, I feel that what was lacking in certain aspects of the story was written that way for a reason.

But anyway! I'm so glad I finally finished it and am finally reading this series! I've already started A Court of Mist and Fury and am already LOVING it even more.

I understand why this series took off, its easy to read, great world building but that's it. It's not the fairy erotica everyone says it is. But reading this in 2022 - nothing ground breaking or new.
Could've been an normal beauty and the beast retelling but the author has other plans towards the end.

The major beats are Beauty and the Beast, more or less. For readers particularly attuned to gendered terminology, the terms “fe/male” show up a lot, sometimes in places they don’t necessarily need to be (e.g., “a towering male figure” when it could just be “a towering figure,” etc.; these terms are shorthand for things that can be described otherwise, with thought and care). I can understand the use of these terms insofar as they refer to the “sex” of beings that aren’t human, but they did throw me out of the story occasionally in ways that were annoying, in part because they often operate on assumptions about bodily makeup and gender that I don’t ascribe to. Once I got a feel for how these terms work insofar as they differentiate faerie/human characteristics, I was okay. But I thought it might be helpful for other enby/gender nonconforming folx to know.

What this book does extraordinarily well is establish a broader nexus of character connections and a wider range for the plot. I don’t think I’ve ever read a first book that set me up so well for the sequels before, and I will read the entire series.
