This book is better than I expected. I should not be surprised, considering that I am already a fan of the Crescent City series that author, Sarah J mass wrote. However, as I waited for the release of the third book, I told myself that I did not need to read the ACOTAR series. Guess who changed their mind after finishing the third book? Me! I’ve heard mixed reviews about this series, especially the first book. I see what all the fuss is about when it comes to Feyre and Rhysand. No, I’m not so sure how I really feel about the former. I’ll get back to you on that.

The one thing that I liked about ACOTAR was the world building. As I continue to read the rest of the books in the series I am sure the other Courts will be introduced. At times , I felt like I was in the world of Prythian. I’m so excited to read the next book. The introductions of new characters and the different courts are what I am really looking forward to. The only thing I didn’t like was that I did not read this book earlier. I really should have.

This book is heavily based on fairy tales (Beauty and the Beast). I didn’t finish this book the first time a read it but this time I was successful. From what I’ve heard from Maas fans this is her worst book, which for the record was a good book. There were some things I thought should be different in the book but still a great read.

The first two-thirds is very slow not much happens in it you could cut characters and whole chapters and it wouldn't affect the plot at all. In the last third the plot picked up I think this could have been a short story and going into more detail in the later part of the book would have been a better format. The female lead was confusing she was supposed to be a good hunter and fighter at times and at others, she was beaten easily. She was more smart and intelligent than most in the town but at other times wasn't intelligent and was often dumbed down. For the main love story, I am very sorry I didn't like the male lead Tamlin at all. I much prefer the friendship between Feyre and Lucian and thought that could have been built on a snarky friends-to-lovers trope. I do have the sequel so hope that picks up.  I expected more from the hype to be honest. Also from all the physical abuse I expected Feyre to have more PTSD maybe that's explored later on.
the "love" scenes were sometimes jarring The first one felt like assault Feyre even says "let go,"  which is a very clear boundary but Tamlin's on magic so brushed away and forgotten very quickly and the others went from 0-100 in a line and I wondered how did we get here.

The first half of the book was harder for me to get through. The main character seemed to be very stereotypical and somewhat annoying with her stubbornness and attitude. The books pace picked up and introduced lots of twists by the middle making it much harder to put down. I was not fully prepared for the spicy parts and some of them felt awkward to read and a bit forced. I enjoy romance, but it felt like there was less “romance” and more like everyone was just lusting after each other (to put it lightly haha).
All that said, I enjoyed the overall plot and did purchase the next book in the series because I hear it gets better as it goes.
