Two stars given because I did finish the book. BUT, to the fully grown adults who would die for this book...what are you on? What am I missing?

ACOTAR is an augmented Beauty and the Beast fanfiction that romanticizes sexual exploitation and sexual violence. Feyre is essentially a Mary Sue, as her flaws are minimal and easily overcome, and her love for Tamlin feels forced--based on his beauty and inferences about his character and stories from others, rather than found in key interactions and moments between the two.

Another major pain point I felt while reading this book was the writing. I understand this is a YA novel, but I have never cringed so hard through a book. Certain phrases are heavily overused (If I have to hear about Feyre's watery bowels one more time..) and many parts are overwritten to death as if to stretch the novel. The humor in ACOTAR is far from witty, it's grating. While the sexual scenes have some heat, the inclusion of growls and claws and other animalistic behaviors gave me the ick. While the storytelling is there, the writing just isn't worth it!

If you're just getting back into reading or trying out fantasy, I can see how this would be approachable, but there has to be some better options out there.

I usually review immediately after finishing a book, but 24 hours later I still can't decide if I loved or hated this book. I think there are a lot of pro and cons.

As many have mentioned, the writing is juvenile, the story has been done many times before, and there are some problematic ideas. Many of these characters start out as obnoxious tropes, but I find throughout the story they become less and less over the top. While I would describe this book overall as junk food, I do keep catching myself thinking about it. It is cringe and cheesy, but I think readers need to remind themselves that it is a romance first, fantasy second. Despite that fact, I find myself intrigued with the fae world and more invested than I ever thought I would be. Many moments (not necessarily romantic/sexy ones) caught me off guard emotionally. Specifically,
when the blue fairy dies after having his wings ripped off and Fayre holds his hand as he dies
as an example. It was the first time in the novel that I truly felt this story was trying to dive into something bigger than sexy fantasies.

Speaking of sexy, it doesn't even get that crazy. I'm don't know why it is described as so spicy, but I found the sex scenes about as interesting as Fifty Shades of Gray....so not great.

Overall, not sure why this book is so hyped up, but I really enjoyed parts of it. With as many books as this author has written, I feel like her writing should have improved a bit by now lol. If you regularly read fantasy and supernatural fanfiction online, this "real" book is for you!

A very consumable book. The world is interesting to be in, but it feels quite shallow. The main character is very frustrating, and for a "fiesty, strong young woman" protagonist, acts in very foolish ways that made me put the book down and sigh. She also doesn't have a lot of agency and 99% of her problems end up being solved by someone else. The power curve is absurd. The book constantly reminds us how fragile she is and how rapidly she will die, which actually strips the narrative of all tension, because you know the protagonist is going to somehow live and succeed against ridiculous odds. The love interests are quite uninteresting, and I was not really convinced of love much at all, only lust. Going back to Feyre's agency, she is lied to, manipulated, drugged and assaulted and still seems perfectly happy with the relationships. It goes to show that just because a book is popular, doesn't mean it is high quality.

Oh boy, so many things to say here. First of all, this was the first series in over 10 years that I DNF'd (never got past the first book). The writing is mediocre at best, the descriptions are trite and cliche, and it reads like fanfiction written by a middle-schooler. The main character, Feyre, is whiny, unlikable, and overall bland and annoying, she reads like a textbook self-insert mary sue who is the best at everything, except being girly because she's "not like other girls". The plot makes no real sense, and the story takes forever to move forward, usually with more focus on the smutty romance bits than the actual storyline. This story has just taken Katniss from the Hunger Games, poorly reskinned her, and dumped her in a wannabe dark and raunchy beauty and the beast ripoff. I could maybe see how it could be enjoyable for a horned up middle schooler/ early high schooler, but this book is not for anyone who wants actual substance to their stories.
