Listened to this while ill. Entertaining enough while my head's full of cotton wool, but nothing special. Some really weird world building, mostly there as an after-thought to facilitate the romance. They have "imported coffee" and fully modern toilets in fairy land?? The "north" of the human realm is apparently at the equator of the planet, but they have non-magical snowy winters there?? Settings are barely described for the most part - author asks you to pitch in your assumptions for what a "dining room" or a "cell" might look like, rather than actually writing a description. The romance is... okay. Nothing compelling. We're told these men are handsome, and that seems to be what should carry the reader's belief in them as romantic leads. The tone of the whole book is strange - it's a romance, it's a fantasy, it's a horror? Lots of barely-described gore, way too much sick and pee. For how people talk about the sex scenes I thought they'd be more graphic, but I don't think genitals are even referred to once - as far as I remember, there's one or two sex scenes, and they didn't exactly leave me blushing. Very chaste. Doesn't really tick any of my boxes for "good books", but weirdly readable despite its many many flaws. The writing style pulls you along at such a pace it's hard to put down, even when not actually enjoying it.

Alright, I’ll give it to the ACOTAR girlies and admit that this was entertaining. I mainly liked the supporting characters over the protagonist, but sometimes their voices blended together. Hopefully throughout the series as each of them develop they’ll become more fleshed out as individuals. The beginning was ROUGH in terms of writing style and dialogue (so much so I genuinely thought she was making fun of the YA fantasy genre), but the further I got the more the dialogue and pacing evened out. Liked it better than Fourth Wing though.

This book is ok. It's pretty standard YA fantasy.

So I don’t know what to say. It wasn’t that bad but I don’t understand the hype. The story was good but most of it was cliche and a bit predictable. The writing was not that good either. There was a lot of repetition when it came to describing things, like I dont want to know that her bowels became watery for the 15th time!

The riddle that the FMC had to figure out was soooooo easy (and cheesy) that it was unbelievable that she wasn’t able to figure it out sooner. There was plot holes and a few things I questioned but I powered through.

Don’t really find the main character interesting shes boring and it’s droned into us in nearly every chapter that she likes to paint. I knew I didn’t like her when she had to be all “quirky” moaning that she had to wear a dress. I switched off through some of it because it was boring and was hard to make sense of a few things.

I feel like I MIGHT read the second book if I can get my hands on it as I have heard that it is better so I’m not giving up this series yet.

Overall it was a good story with a few twists and magical elements and a whimsical setting that was immersive.

I am late to the game with this series, but I do think I would have enjoyed it more if I was a little younger. The emotional immaturity of the FMC contrasted with the MMCs was too much for me.

I bought the first two books of this series almost a year ago. I never picked them up because I felt very intimated and overwhelmed by the popularity of Sarah J. Maas and also by the massive catalogue of books I am to read if I enjoy it.

I have to say, for all of the extreme hype over this series, I was expecting a little more. I love fantasy so of course, it was good, but I have definitely read better. However, this was still a good book, don’t get me wrong. Just a tad overhyped. All that being said, as a fantasy lover, I will definitely be continuing this series.

I think people have said it gets better and I am extremely excited to get to know Rhysand. Honestly though, maybe it would have been better if it were not so popular and I did not have almost the entire book spoiled for me before reading. I just didn’t connect with Tamlin that much, but maybe I am already biased towards Rhysand. Anyways, enough talk. I enjoyed it overall and I’m picking up the next book as we speak in hopes that it will be a 5 star read.
