Don't listen to BookTok, this first book in the series does not have spice. It's closest you can get to fade to black without actually doing so.

If you decide to read this book, the pay off doesn't happen until chapter 54 of book 2, A Court of Mist and Fury. You have to commit to reading both.

I enjoyed it for the story, action, and characters.

This book had me so conflicted bc for the first half I was kinda bored but when it picked up… it picked UP.
Honestly it felt like reading a different book after the high stakes actually hit I literally had to stay up until 3am to finish it I couldn’t put it down.
I’m super excited to read the next books bc I feel like sjm will take the series in such a good direction with the foundation she set in this book.

Very good introductory fantasy book. A majority of the book is a very domestic fish out of water plot that may be boring to some but I found entertaining and a good introduction to the ACOTAR/TOG/CC world building/Sarah J. Moss’s writing style. The climax of the story comes in quite late and feels a bit rushed but isn’t awful.
