A very consumable book. The world is interesting to be in, but it feels quite shallow. The main character is very frustrating, and for a "fiesty, strong young woman" protagonist, acts in very foolish ways that made me put the book down and sigh. She also doesn't have a lot of agency and 99% of her problems end up being solved by someone else. The power curve is absurd. The book constantly reminds us how fragile she is and how rapidly she will die, which actually strips the narrative of all tension, because you know the protagonist is going to somehow live and succeed against ridiculous odds. The love interests are quite uninteresting, and I was not really convinced of love much at all, only lust. Going back to Feyre's agency, she is lied to, manipulated, drugged and assaulted and still seems perfectly happy with the relationships. It goes to show that just because a book is popular, doesn't mean it is high quality.

The second half was much more interesting than the first half in my opinion. It’s not mind blowing but the ending left me interested enough that I do plan to read the rest of the series!

Oh boy, so many things to say here. First of all, this was the first series in over 10 years that I DNF'd (never got past the first book). The writing is mediocre at best, the descriptions are trite and cliche, and it reads like fanfiction written by a middle-schooler. The main character, Feyre, is whiny, unlikable, and overall bland and annoying, she reads like a textbook self-insert mary sue who is the best at everything, except being girly because she's "not like other girls". The plot makes no real sense, and the story takes forever to move forward, usually with more focus on the smutty romance bits than the actual storyline. This story has just taken Katniss from the Hunger Games, poorly reskinned her, and dumped her in a wannabe dark and raunchy beauty and the beast ripoff. I could maybe see how it could be enjoyable for a horned up middle schooler/ early high schooler, but this book is not for anyone who wants actual substance to their stories.

This was an utterly amazing experience! The cast, music, sound effects and voice acting just adds a whole new level to this book, that I would actually urge anyone who loves ACOTAR, or even those who don’t…to give this experience a try!

I was completely lulled, entranced and captivated by the spell of Prythian that it made for a very unproductive me at work…. (don’t tell my boss) as all I wanted to do was pay attention and listen.

This is NOT a traditional audiobook, you won’t find any “he said”, “she said” in this. Instead the characters will actually just speak, so the flow of dialog actually follows the form of real conversation between people. This is not “word for word” the original text from the story either. Lines would be adapted for the audio so a character who stutters a line would ACTUALLY stutter as they said the line instead of “Feyre” saying “he stuttered as he said”…

BUT don’t let the adaption part scare you….this is just amazing! Totally something to shout about from rooftops and place on billboards!

I cannot wait for part two!!!

*spice increases throughout series

If you’re reading this book/series for the first time, be careful of spoilers! So much of it got ruined for me from reviews and posts! (Including spoilers for future books in reviews of this one.) The second book in this series seems to be most readers’ favorite (including mine!) so if you’re on the fence about continuing the series after this one, do it!

This was the series that sparked my love for fantasy. I had read Harry Potter and loved it, but as an adult, hadn’t read much of it. I’m now reading it for a second time through and picking up so many details I didn’t realize mattered before.
