"My bowels went watery" 🤨
Lazily written, unnecessary padding, frustrating character choices, stupid ending.

I had heard countless times how good this series was, so I jumped at the chance to acquire this series. All I have to say is...it was AMAZING!!! The book from beginning to end had me on the edge of my seat. I never knew what would happen next and before I knew it, I found myself reading another chapter! I did not expect Feyre to become High Fae at the end. My jaw literally dropped. And Rhysand? What a hunk! Amarantha being defeated also brought a smile to my face! Overall, a five out of five for me! I am so excited to continue as I heard that the second book is the best out of all of them. Next, A Court of Mist and Fury!

I really enjoyed the world built by Sarah J Maas in this book and loved the writing style, but found many of the plot lines to follow predictable and familiar tropes. I think this series has a lot of potential so I will continue reading - even if just to learn more about Rhysand! I never fully invested in Feyre and Tamlin’s relationship and find the dynamic to be quite stale. I find Rhysand a much more interesting character and am intrigued to see how his relationship develops with Feyre!

Admittedly, from what I had heard I thought there was a lot more romance and was worried that 'smut' within the book would take away from the fantasy plot its supposed to have. No need for me to have worried though, great descriptive worldbuilding and general fantasy theme all the way through. Some slightly slower bits but loads of twists and turns keeping the book interesting!

'All the warmth, all the sparkling joy, drained from me like blood down a drain.'

This sentence sums up so much of this book for me: needlessly wordy, dark, and not well crafted enough to warrant all the hype.

The plot was good, but it would have been so much better in the hands of a more competent writer who knew how to actually employ the flowery prose with which Maas clearly wanted to fill this overly long novel.

Also the spicy level and romance (The Main Things that are supposed to make this series notable) are underwhelming, to say the least. It certainly does not help matters that you *know* Tamlin was never intended to be End Game.

I will still read the next novel because that is where I have been told that this series actually starts to get good?? We will see...

The first third of the book was extremely slow in my opinion, which is weird because the rest of it was pretty packed. I enjoy fast paced novels, and the ideas and world are very unique. I really enjoyed the plot in the last half.

I also had problems with some of the connections between characters. Too much build up, not enough actually getting to know them.

I feel like this is one of the silliest books, if not the silliest book, I have ever finished, but I also couldn’t put it down? I definitely wouldn’t call it good, but it reads like something smutty off fanfiction dot net circa 2002, so it’s a certain kind of cozy (for something with a fair amount of gore in it). I’m about Maas’s age so it makes sense.

It’s a little noncon so if you’re sensitive to that maybe avoid it.
