I was genuinely surprised by this book. While I don’t much care for Feyre’s self-loathing inner monologues, they got pretty tiring to read through, I really appreciate how naturally Maas writes dialogue between characters.

Tamlin and Feyre, and Lucien and Feyre, believably grow closer over the duration of the book. The second half of the book is by far better written and more intriguing. I appreciate the fairytale-retelling themes coming though, but the brutality of some scenes throughout the first half of the book was really jarring.

Overall, I think I’ll just have to read the next book and see where the story takes me

There’s a lot to unpack here. Could have used another editor. A FMC who is frustratingly resistant to making any sort of smart decision. Most of the characters are tropes nailed together inside of a trench coat. The plot borrows so much from the Disney Beauty and The Beast movie I’m surprised they let this get published. The events of the story move so quickly that I often felt hurried through scenes with no world building, which very often ruined my immersion. Character movements within a scene were often confusing and hard to follow. Creature and character descriptions were lacking and I found it hard to picture the scale of anything. It’s not groundbreaking in any way or reinventing the wheel.

That being said, I couldn’t put it down. I found myself rooting for Feyre, despite her idiocy. The plot is wholly unoriginal for 2/3rds of this book, but once it took off, it really got going. Sure, I’ve probably read similar plots a hundred times before in books and fanfiction, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a lot of fun. Sure, the dialogue was flat and much of the writing cliche and cringe. But that’s the charm.

Was it good? No.
Will I read all the others? Yes.

Definitely an entertaining ride, with some interesting world-building. I found myself enjoying the evil characters the most, or at least the "good" ones who had an edge to their personality (like Lucien and Alis, and even Night Court guy*). Feyre reminds me a bit of Lyra from Pullman's His Dark Materials series, but her pendulum swinging between totally trusting and ferociously suspicious started to wear me down.

Some of it felt a bit cliché, capitalizing on well-worn tropes of snobby sisters**, high fae and various curses. Tamlin's curse was WAY too specific and seemed to function as a scapegoat for the plot. I got tired of the reliance on glamours. And while I know the genre has its fans of the bodice-ripping passionate scenes, that's really not my thing. I was mildly annoyed at the naming of the puka/pooka (audiobook, sorry) --- that's what you call a cute furry animal, not an evil thing.

I am glad I checked it out because I have so many friends who really loved it. I might even check out the next in the series because there are certain characters I'd love to see again. Ikeda's reading was quite solid and engaging.

*Disadvantage of the audiobook --- I have to look up spellings. Unfortunately, when I looked up Feyre, I got a major spoiler (although it became obvious before it actually happens in the narrative), so I am not looking up how to spell "Reese/Rhys?" Hence, Night Court guy.**Yes, I know that one takes an interesting turn, but I was so annoyed by her character I didn't care by the time we got there.

A Court of Thorns and Roses
By Sarah J Maas
5⭐️

This book was so much more than I could have ever imagined! It is definitely a 5 star read that every fantasy lover should read! I really think this would even be a great fantasy starter book for those that want to see if they might like fantasy.

Feyre, a human, finds herself forced from the human lands to the lands of the Fae. She is stubborn, strong, and very capable for a human. However, as she enters the lands of the Fae she meets members of the fae that are unlike anything we could imagine. Their physical characteristics and personalities are so well crafted by the author that you almost forget that you are reading. The story holds you in its grip the entire way through the book!

I am super excited to start the next book in the series. This is my first book by Sarah J Maas and I can already tell she’ll be one of my favorite authors!

I’m aware this has taken me such a long time to read but finally I’ve finished it!
I’ve ventured into another fantasy world, which I never thought I’d do again!
This books follows Feyre as she hunts for food in the woods for her family. Except she kills a High Fae’s deer which leads to her becoming kidnapped by them as part of her punishment. Feyre lived with her sisters, Nesta and Elain and their father. When Feyre is taken to the new lands, we are introduced to Tamlin, Lucien and Rhysand. Feyre and Tamlin strike up a relationship at this point but will not say that she loves him. We are also introduced to Alis around this time too. Soon after, Tamlin and Lucien tell Feyre to run and not look back, so she goes home. However, she returns home to find that their neighbour Clare’s house was burned down and she realises that it is her fault that this has happened. So she leaves home again, and returns back to Tamlin/Lucien.
Upon entering the world again, she soon finds that Tamlin and Lucien are nowhere to be seen, but she does speak to Alis who tells her where Tamlin and Lucien are. Feyre then decides to go and find Tamlin as she’s told that he was taken by Amarantha because Feyre did not declare her love to him before she left. Feyre was put before Amarantha and this is when she saw Clare’s dead mutilated body, but also saw Tamlin sitting alongside Amarantha in his own throne but making a conscious effort to not react to anything Feyre says or does.
Feyre is told that she is to complete 3 tasks in order to release Tamlin from her spell, but she was not told how easy or how hard these tasks would be. Feyre goes on to smash all 3 tasks, the 3rd one being the most horrible of the tasks, and this in turn means Tamlin is released from under Amarantha’s spell and Amarantha herself is killed.
This book was a little slow to get into but I did love it once I got into it, hence the 4 star rating!
Do recommend!
