It's neither as bad nor as good as I've heard people say.

Don't get me wrong, it is bad. It's got terrible pacing, it's horribly repetitive, the main character is thoroughly unlikeable, and the writing itself is poor (odd word choice, run-on sentences, grammatical sloppiness, trope-y refrains...). However, you'd thinking it was the end of literature from how some people talk about it.

All in all, a very mid, unimpressive book, not nearly deserving its huge fanbase, but if you're in the mood for schlocky, "dark" fantasy romance, you'll probably enjoy it.

Feyre was one of the most annoying and stupid main characters I'd ever seen in a book. I many times wanted to just punch her in the face. Her way of thinking was so provoking I even made a whole book tab of my annotations for annoying things and dumb shit by her. If there's anything that made me give that low rating it was her.

Tamlin is such a bore. The fact that most of the fae-ness is hidden until about 60% of the way through the book made it a slog. I almost dnf-ed this book for a second time but pushed through with the power of liveblogging my frustrations to a friend. Thankfully the last 15% was actually enjoyable largely because tamlin wasnt in it much

The only thing thats carrying me forward into the next book is knowing that
tamlin/feyre isn't endgame

Listening to this because I’ve already read it and these are my spoiler thoughts upon returning to it:
- goofy ahh curse. the terms are so strangely specific and catered to Ferye’s situation that it makes it so implausible that Amarantha came up with all of that 50 years ago. She has to HATE FAIRIES and also KILL ONE with HATE IN HER HEART and then SMOOCH A FAIRY like cmon guys
- SO MANY RHYSAND EASTER EGGS !!!! The random “dreams” and knowing what he did for her and knowing his backstory just like… chefs kiss
- Tamlin is an abuser even in this book, and this is coming from someone who was 10000% team Tamlin the first go round. He has an unpredictable temper and Feyre expects violent outbursts from him even when she’s head over heels for him. Get away from that man!!!
- On the topic of Tamlin…. Maybe he should’ve… I don’t know… HELPED his girlfriend at all?? I get that he was trying to seem “indifferent” but Rhys was playing the same card and he still made the situation better for her. Tamlin be supportive challenge level impossible
- Tamlin is just so icky and I won’t ever be able to go back to my OG view of him after ACOMAF and ACOWAR like he’s just the WORST
- Loving how Tamlin and Lucien are like “Rhysand is so dangerous and violent and you have to stay away from the night court it’s so bad” but I know full well the night court inner circle during Amarantha is just like cutting it up and getting drunk the whole time. Bffr
- Loving that Feyre was like “I can’t wait to live with Tamlin for years and years and years” like she’s not gonna bounce from that man’s house within like 6 months. Good to have goals girl!

I really enjoyed this story, but some of it felt so predictable that I was questioning whether my predictions were too simple? I will still probably continue the series because there are questions I have that I would like answered moving forward.

This was OK. I didn’t love it. I didn’t hate it. I’ve certainly read worse and likely will read worse in the future. I was interested because people said it was a beauty and the beast retelling. I was hesitant to pick the book up though since there were a lot of mixed reviews. It wasn’t until I was being told that Stephen King’s fairy tale was a love letter to this series that my interest was piqued again (I loved Stephen King’s fairy tale). I was finally able to pick the book up in a slip the line loan.

To the people who claim the statement about Stephen king’s fairy tale - you are wrong. So so so very wrong.

The tale has so many beauty and the beast elements that I thought had interesting twists. But making Feyre illiterate felt really unnecessary and such an odd choice. I don’t think they needed to author needed to go that far to make Feyre not Belle. It would have been enough to just make Feyre into painting over reading. That was more than enough. I didn’t really care for Feyre much. There would be side characters felt more consistent and were more interesting. Feyre’s overall character is very inconsistent. She will say one thing and later on say something or do something that contradicts an earlier stated belief. She felt shallow and very one dimensional to me.

Will I continue with the series? Possibly, but not any time soon. Would I recommend this series to someone else? Sure, as far as fantasy or romantacy books go this one is fine, if a little mediocre and weak in parts.

A slog to get through, kind of beauty and the beast/Stockholm’s syndrome love story but boring besides the pretty descriptions of the nice locations. Also I didn’t find any of the characters likeable
