I’ve heard the rest of the series gets better, but this didn’t really compel me to read the next one.

It gives Beauty and the Beast vibes, but interesting enough to keep reading.

This book is in the same camp as Fourth Wing; it sits on two genres and makes both genres a little worse.

FANTASY PART
Same critique for Fourth Wing: The fantasy piece feels a bit hollow because of how little the reader gets to see the world. This book effectively has 3 sets and a limited cast of characters, like, 3 per set. The world feels really tiny.

ROMANCE PART
The tension caused by the fantasy setting puts strain on the main characters such that most of their interactions are annoying. Things get better, but I'd say for the first third of the book, welcome to Annoying-Interaction City, population: you, bro.

OVERALL
This reads like a fantasy fulfillment novel á là Twilight, mixed with Beaty and the Beast. It's a fun read (if you don't mind the slightly bad pacing).

Essentially, I have 1000 bad things to say about this book, but I'm easy to entertain and enjoyed it. 4 stars.
