It felt like I was reading a faerie version of Beauty and the Beast at times, but still enjoyed the book overall. I found the main character to be relatable and kept me engaged in the story. I love the concept of the realms and hope there is more to come as I continue on in the series.

I like most of the book, but I really wish she was a less passive protagonist. I wish she was more sure of herself without the approval of the men in the book.

As low stakes romantasy fun, I actually really enjoyed it. Just knowing there were going to be cringy parts, a total pick-me FMC, and not a lot of character development set me up for success. And I had a great time.

Romatasy, Enemies to Lovers, 2 🔥

Overall, this was good and interesting. Very Hunger Games-vibes, and in league with Fourth Wing. The ending dragged on a bit, and I'm kind of tired of the whole "mother is dead" trope.

I mostly read this to feel part of the zeitgeist (if late to it), but I will say I liked the dark fairytale story and felt it was a unique take.

I'm not sure if I'll continue reading the series, but I looked up spoilers for the 2nd book and am pleased to know that my grievance with the main character's love interest / my preference for the "other guy" is addressed.

I loved the world-building in this book.
