I just really enjoyed getting lost in a historical page turner with a murder and a trial and strong female narrators. Made me think about the lack of opportunities for women

Longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction

Only a year before, Lady Christian was newly married, leading a life of privilege and respectability. So, what led her to risk everything for an affair? And does that make her guilty of murder?

This is the portrait of two very different women, from opposite stations in life; neither woman is safe from predatory men and the judgement of society and I appreciated this aspect of the story.
The pace did drag a bit in places but otherwise, I thought the writing was fine. I always enjoy multiple POVs and I appreciated the insertion of the newspaper extracts that added to the sensationalism of this (based on real events) case.
I'm struggling to describe this book as anything other than "fine." It did nothing wrong, but the story and the characters have ended up being fairly forgettable in the long run.
