Whilst I did enjoy this, it felt like a combination of The Wolf Den and The Marriage Portrait, with Violet and Christian's perspectives being these retellings, respectively. It didn't feel like anything new, and I also felt that the books it reminded me of told the stories better. I've definitely read better historical fiction that hasn't made the Women's Prize, and I've read better nominations in previous years. It was fun and was easy to get through, but isn't a favourite.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the two points of view and the time line hopping. The build up was great and the court case/punishment but the actual murder didn’t really make much sense. I was waiting for a big reveal and it was just random and not very logical. Still a fast enjoyable and easy read.
