Although I enjoyed the prose, I spent much of the book wondering which two characters were about to have sex in the next chapter. I would think working as a prostitute in the 17th century would be a horrific daily experience, but that didn't come across in the book at all. This also isn't a whodunnit mystery (which given the book won a crime-writing prize might be the expectation).
