To start with the negative, i think that this book just had too many fake-outs and political machinations for me. The political machinations couldn’t really be avoided—they were part of the story that Backman wants to tell, and very necessary. I just found them boring. The fake-outs, on the other hand, felt distracting to that story. I think it made certain emotional moments feel cheap instead of impactful. That being said, this book does emotion and characters beautifully. There’s a really palpable sense of connection between the characters. And i think that’s really essential to the story of discord. Because you need that connection and that history if you want there to be stakes between warring entities. Once again, I’m at a loss for where this series might go in the next book. And I’m slightly worried about the fates of certain characters.

overall, i enjoyed this. i love Backman's writing and the Beartown characters are very 3 dimensional and loveable. i did not enjoy how we were introduced to a bunch of new characters and how the plot became so political. despite this, Backman never disappoints me with his strong characters that make me feel so deeply for them.

It’s blown me away a bit less than the first book. I loved spending more time with the characters I loved in Bear Town. Backman is able to continue the story and at the same time tackle new, recognizable trends we might see in our lives, too. Admirably done, because it never feels like a stretch or fan service. The one drawback is just that it didn’t feel like a necessary sequel given the wrap up of the first book in this duology.  Which isn’t bad at all - still it’s one of the best sequels I’ve read - but it felt just a bit jarring to re-enter a world that seemed finished and well-rounded.

Major trigger warning for SA and self harm, for both this book and the previous novel. This book has a surprising amount of compassion without ignoring the harmful impact of characters when they do harmful things. Did not think I would read not one, but two books largely centered around hockey, but I sure did!
