It took me a while to get into Unearthed but once I got into it I really enjoyed it. The authors describe it as Indiana Jones meets Tomb Raider in space which is pretty much exactly what it is. We meet Mia and Jules on Gaia, an alien planet and both of them are there for their own reasons. Mia is there to scavenge for some tech she can bring back and sell in order to help her and her sister out of poverty. Jules is there to prove his scientist father right that the former inhabitants of the planet have bad intentions for Earth. They team up and work together to navigate the dangers of both Gaia and from other mercenaries on the planet. O and there’s a bit of kissing along the way.

I will say that I called the big twist at the end almost immediately once the key characters were in place. However, it was a plot twist that I thought would be particularly good so I was pleasantly UNsurprised. I have my theories about the Undying.
Spoiler Remember when they causally mentioned that there was a ship full of colonists going to Alpha Centari who were lost? Remember how Earth did nothing to try to help them? Remember how space is vast and full of wormholes and all kinds of things? I’m thinking this lost ship of colonists ending up going through a wormhole and getting lost. The last transmission they received was Earth saying “Godspeed” and not doing anything to save them. They survive the wormhole and I assume they travel through time. Perhaps they come across the dead world of the Undying and use it to transmit a message back to Earth in order for them to send scientists who’s smart enough to decode the traps and work the tech unwittingly giving the colonists the weapons and means of transport back to Earth. The colonists are rightfully pissed off and hence want to take back Earth for themselves. … This is super convoluted and probably doesn’t make sense in the big scheme of things but it’s where I see the story going.

I took off a star because it took me a while to really get into the story. There were times where I felt like the pacing was a bit slow and I would lose a little interest. But when I was invested in the story and things were moving along I was 100% into the story and was at the edge of my seat. I will read the sequel when it comes out to find out if my predictions are right. Also, side note, I’m so happy this is a duology. A trilogy wouldn’t work for a series like this and a duology is just perfect in my opinion.

THAT CLIFF HANGER

Fun YA read about temple raiding investigation on a distant planet, with a bit of a romance, tons of danger ... and a cliffhanger.

At the 95% mark, I started to get nervous. I mean, I didn't travel halfway across the universe to be left dangling in the middle of the story! They got me.

Mia was a fun, over-impulsive heroine, Jules was naive but interesting, there were some plot holes, but overall a fun read, full of adventure. Made to be filmed.

As I write this review, two days after finishing UNEARTHED, I am still 100% reeling from that ending. I have to say, I'm a sucker for a book that can slay me with the final sentence, and this one definitely accomplished that.

It's a little funny, how much I loved this book. I say that, because I don't like Indiana Jones, and I don't like the Tomb Raider movie(s? Is there another one?). So, given that I keep seeing comparisons to those two, you'd think this book wouldn't have been for me. BUT. What I do love is Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. Writing books. Together.

Amie and Meagan just seem to have this magical ability to write beautifully together. I liked their Starbound trilogy, but Unearthed is even better.

While slow in places, I was never bored reading Unearthed. There were a lot of inner monologues that seemed to throw off the pace a little, and many details about the plot seemed to be repeated unnecessarily often. But other than that, I thought this book was really well done.

Ya'll know I love characters the best. Oh boy, these characters are to die for. Mia and Jules are both so wonderful and squishy and witty and I just wanted to go into the book and save them myself. Their interactions and dialogue were just SO GOOD. They're really what brought Unearthed to life and made it shine for me.

The story itself was really fun. I loved the setting, though I could have gone for a bit more world-building on the planet of Gaia to really help me visualize it better. The twists were great, and where I saw some things coming, others I didn't at all, and I love a good surprise. There there was that cliffhanger of an ending that I mentioned earlier. Whew. It was one of those moments where I had to double-check to make sure my book wasn't missing pages, because WOW what a beautifully cruel way to end a book.

I definitely recommend UNEARTHED, especially to fans of the sci-fi genre looking for something fun with strong characters. And don't be scared off by the fact that this one has a cliffhanger, I promise you won't regret picking it up.

Onward, if you dare. (I dare you.)

I'm actually quite happy I'm finally done with this audio book. I'm certain I would never have finished this if I had read it instead of listened to it.

While it did start slow, the end made up for it a hundred fold. I feel like I just read an episode of The Twilight Zone.
