Mostly ok, curious enough in the mystery to read undying but I honestly dont care for the "romance" between Jules and Amelia..ill be honest, I struggled with this one which sucks since it was really looking forward to liking it.

So much fun! Definitely got some Stargate vibes from this.

Wait....what just happened?!! That ending definitely has me wanting more.

A bit of a slow start but once they got to the temple & had to start solving the puzzles things picked up. I had to know if what waited at the end was salvation or doom.

I enjoyed our two POV characters. Amelia/Mia is spunky, resourceful, & won't let anything stop her from achieving her goal. Jules may seem like the spoiled rich kid but he is on a quest for knowledge & redemption. These two make quite the pair. I can't wait to see what is instore for them in book 2.

Probably a 3.5

The world is on its knees; enter two kids from opposite ends of, well everything... education, lifestyle, street awareness....

Mia and Jules are so different yet complement each other like oats and milk. I’m eagerly waiting book two.

Mia is not to be confused with Mia from Kaufman’s other writing. This ones an Amelia :)

2.5 stars. Aw man-I’m bummed as I’ve been waiting for this new release! The authors SLAYED in the Starbound trilogy but didn’t quite make the hyperjump with Unearthed. It feels like they started writing this book many years before the Starbound trilogy, lost interest or got hooked on the other novels, only to stumbled back on this while cleaning and decided to finish it up.

This seems like it was written for young teens or a new audience.

The twist at the end is the best part of this book and ends with a cliffhanger.

A lot of things didn’t work for me: super low key sci-fi ; like they can decipher an alien message on a new planet, but still write in journals, use walkie-talkies and in general don’t seem to have much futuristic technology while on a new world, with the exception of a much-admired camping stove. Jules character; middle-class Indiana Jones & Astronaut Chef. Eyerolling romance.

I’m disappointed but it is still an ok book. For me, this is like riding a bicycle after you’ve just gotten out of a learjet.

2.5

Xenoarchaeology via a YA version of [b:Romancing the Stone|1771717|Romancing the Stone|Catherine Lanigan|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1375412715s/1771717.jpg|1769873].

Humanity has been contacted by aliens who call themselves "the Undying". Amelia is a "scavver", a scavenger looking for Undying technology on the distant planet Gaia. She needs a big payout to buy her sister out of a horrible situation back on Earth. Jules is the son of an iconoclastic scientist imprisoned for claiming that the Undying technology is dangerous and not to be trusted and he's on Gaia to prove that his father was correct all along. Between his genius for translation and Undying lore and Amelia's survival and problem-solving they make a formidable team. Which is a good thing, because they're being pursued by other scavvers and more mysterious forces.

I quite enjoyed this, but I felt it was very repetitive at times, particularly around Jules and Amelia's feelings towards each other and Jules' suspicions around the Undying. It also employs what is fast becoming a tired trope of a cliffhanger ending. Yes, I realize the intent is to make me want to buy the next book, but at this stage, I'm so sick of these that it makes me less likely to continue with the series when the author does this.

Short Review: Fist, why does Chicago always get fucked over when the world turns to shit?! Jules bothered me at times, he is very stubborn and didn't like to think about safety. Mia thou, loved her, she kicked butt in here, knew when to fuck people over and when to just let shit go. The world building was pretty good, i could easily see this new planet we were put on. That ending, fuck, book 2 is too far away. Amie never disappoints me.

Misc.

Book Boyfriend: None.
Best Friend Material: Mia!

Archeology, mystery, crazy people with guns, and a last page plot twist. Loved it. (Some of it was predictable.)

I'm agreeing with everyone else that"Indiana Jones in space" sums it up well.
I found the story to be entertaining but a bit slow in the middle.
But the ending is such a cliffhanger that I really want to know what'll happen!!
