Escaping from Houdini: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Content Warnings: emotional cheating, murder, gruesome depictions of death, poisoning, cartomancy (reading of tarot), corruption
Contains Spoilers!!!
Audrey Rose and Thomas join Audrey Rose’s uncle aboard the RMS Etruria as they travel to America for a murder investigation. The RMS Etruria boasts seven nights of entertainment by the Moonlight Carnival led by the mysterious Mephistopheles. However the carnival atmosphere turns to terror as bodies start dropping during each performance. Audrey Rose is determined to solve this case on her own, but even the great Audrey Rose makes mistakes, and her mistake could cost her the love of her life.
Although this book is written well it contains one of my biggest turn offs, cheating. With how much I liked the Audrey Rose in the previous books in the series, this book pretty much made me hate her. She gets so wrapped up in the mystery of Mephistopheles and the murders that she completely disregards Thomas’s feelings, concerns, and love for a lark. I get that Mephistopheles basically was using the art of illusion to try to give Audrey Rose something to focus on rather than the ties to his troupe, but seriously did she lose her brains when they got out to the ocean!?!??!? This book completely broke down the relationship that the author built between the reader and the characters and even, in my opinion, changed Audrey Rose as a character to fit into this weird character of Mephistopheles’ making. Audrey Rose was so focused on Mephistopheles that she didn’t solve the mystery with her usual focused determination. It seemed like none of the mystery was even solved or tied together until the climax, making it seem sloppy instead of genius in hardship.

2.5 - 3 stars. While I love, love this first two and hopefully the last book, someone please tell me what the fuck the point of this book was other than to destroy relationship development that was already there. I understand it from an objective view but...it was so boring in a lot of places. This third book disappointed me, but there were a lot of great moments in the beginning.

Another murder mystery, or shall I say serial murder case for Cressworth to solve on board a carnival filled with suspicious people and a trickster.
While on their way to New York, the pair encounter another gruesome murder which stirred every person on the ship in panic.
Seven days on board a cursed ship.
Will the killer ever stop?
