This book was so complex. Initially I found it too complex, and I didn't really enjoy it. What changed was when I actually sat down and dedicated my time to reading the story, I found it to be quite enjoyable. The ways that everyone is connected with one another were so intricate I felt like I was reading a Shakespearean play at times. Most of the relationships came as good surprises: connections that I didn't see coming but made the story more worthwhile and interesting. I will say that it's good this book was the only one I chose for my October Book of the Month, because it took me longer than average to read it. All in all, an excellent piece of work that reads slowly at times but ties everything together nicely.
This book has received rave reviews, but I quit reading halfway through, and I rarely stop reading a book once I begin. I was constantly struggling to figure out who was the main character in each chapter and if we were in the present or past. The plot was too slow for me and I got bored. I did want to appreciate this story but I gave up. It was too ‘twee’ for me. The idea of the slightly ‘out of step’ protagonist didn’t get me in so I decided not to finish this one.
Kate Morton's books always tick a lot of my boxes and yet are still vaguely unsatisfying.
