Enjoyed the ghost aspect of this book and the many characters so intricately woven into and influenced by the same property.

Not my favorite. I felt the story dragged so it was hard to remain interested.

I could tell this was trying to be clever, but it was taking too long to get to things. At times it felt like there were too many POVs, and don’t love the relationships. I came across as predictable which made it being slow feel slower. If you like historical fiction mystery energy and very descriptive writing then sure, but for my taste the book could have been half the length.
A lot of characters and time periods to keep track of but I really enjoyed this.

This book is SUCH an elaborate story. So many layers across so many years, all connected by a haunting that stems from a mysterious death.
Our present day heroine Elodie is an archivist who uncovers some mysteries in an old leather satchel, which of course leads her to investigate in person. But we're also following the story of the 19th century ghost of a young woman who's somehow connected to a famous artist and has never left Birchwood Manor, where Elodie is trying to uncover the truth.
The book weaves in and out of all the people who have visited Birchwood Manor throughout the years, and how they're all touched by the mysteries surrounding the estate and the presence(s) there. It is honestly a LONG build up, but well worth it in the end. I promise 😉😏

3.5. It was a slow start but it picked up about one-third of the way through. I feel like she was trying REALLY HARD. Overall it was enjoyable.

This book is enchanting. I’ll be honest in saying that it initially annoyed me...Elodie’s character and the archives made me feel dusty and that Elodie didn’t belong in the year 2017. Something about it didn’t match for me. But as the book went on, Birchwood Manor began to feel real, warm and comforting. Something about Morton’s writing style is so believable that I felt I was at the house multiple times. The inconsistent way in which the story bounced between characters initially threw me as well but as the characters became more intertwined it felt as if all the dots were connecting.
Due to my initial impression, I was convinced I would dislike this book. But it’s undeniable how well written and engaging it is. Birdies end is extremely tragic. I love the depth of connection I feel both to her living and after lives. A wonderful story about time, history, art, love, and secrets.

I wish this author would write a book every month! I wish there was a little more character development of Elodie and Jack but still loved it.
