3.7 AVERAGE

The overall concept of this book is great. However, it jumped around too much and there were way too many characters.

Really enjoyed this book. It was a little bit hard to follow so many stories and tie them altogether sometimes. I’m a bit confused by how albertina died.

This book was such a joy to read, and such a massive emotional rollercoaster!

The English countryside setting was so immersive, and Kate Morton has a major talent for weaving together multiple timelines to build one cohesive story. There were so many twists and turns, things hinted at in the very first chapter that you don't even realise were hints until far further into the book!

The characters were fascinating and so distinct from each other. I loved that most of the book was narrated by Birdie and that the other storylines were woven through as if they were her memories and she was reliving them once again.

The other main characters were all figures from throughout Birdie's life: Ada Lovegrove, Juliet and Tip, Leonard Gilbert, and even Jack and Elodie. There were so many threads coming together in this book - an English child who grew up in India, a WW1 veteran, a fortune hunter, an archivist, a WW2 journalist, and a group of mid 1800s artists.

I love how most of these characters were just living their lives, feeling drawn to Birchwood Manor without really knowing why, and contributing their piece to the story that spans more than a hundred years. The mystery of the Summer of 1862 spans the entire story, with Elodie and Jack in 2017 combining their separate knowledge in their attempts to solve it.

The book was full of beautiful quotes, ones that I tabbed and continue to go back to, despite very rarely tabbing my books.

My only real complaint about the book is that the ending was not as in depth as I wanted it to be. It's almost like it was partially unfinished - I wanted to know what happened to Elodie and Jack; I wanted to know how Elodie's conversation with her father went, and whether it drew them closer or tore them apart completely; I wanted to know what would happen with Alastair. Mostly, I just wanted more!

Which just means that the book succeeded!

An absolute 5

The writing in this book is beautiful and it interlaces so many storylines and I couldn't figure out how they were all going to come together until they did. However it changed points of view and time periods and everything so often that it led to me being completely lost at times and I'm sure I missed some things. This may have been due to the fact it took me so long to get through because other books were calling for my attention.

I want to give this novel 4 stars because it really did have a good plot (or many of plots!) and suspense packed plot twists/conclusions... however due to all of the plurals (and wordiness of the book) I am more inclined to rate this novel a 3. It was good but there was way too many characters and different plots at different time frames to keep up with! There were also alot of adjectives in this novel which I found just thrown in to make this book have the sum total of 450 plus pages instead of what could have been 350...

Well I finished it!
It took a few days, but I did it!
My arms will recover!
I gave The Clockmaker’s Daughter 5 stars because it was engaging, beautifully written, enjoyable and intriguing.
But this is a heavy book!
In so many ways...
The book itself is BIG! I had to prop it up while reading...

This is a beautiful written, captivating story. I loved it!!

3.5, but I may reread in the future. This novel has a lot of layers (almost too many that could prove to be intimidating like a multi layered cake that could topple over). Morton often mentions Dickens within the book, and it does give Victorian vibes, but be prepared for more of a “Bleak House” situation versus a “Pride and Prejudice”.
