I normally love all of Kate’s books, but I couldn’t get into this one at all. Maybe I’ll try again when I don’t have a hungry baby interrupting me. But somehow I don’t think it was his fault...I think it’s a poorly written book.

496 pages and she can’t wrap things up? One utterly depressing and horrifying ending, and then you have to decide how the rest end? So many characters and stories, when revisited, I’d have to try to figure out who she was reading about. Really long, boring, with a few emotional parts.
This was quite a lovely book that wove an intricate story about art and connection and grief and the power of place. I adored the pacing—the slow unravelling of a twisted web of relationships, hundreds of years in the making. Perfectly timed so you only knew exactly what you needed to at any given moment, and not a thing more. I mostly enjoyed the brilliantly vivid characters and the atmosphere that highlighted poetry in reality.
Beautifully written. This was my first time reading Kate Morton, and her talent was obvious. However, I had a very tough time getting into this book. The pacing is extremely slow, especially in the first half. The various characters and storylines make it difficult to keep track of what is happening, when, and where. Morton tries to tie it all together neatly in the end, but the conclusion is not entirely satisfying, especially after all the hard work required to get there.
This was a good read, although I would recommend that you proceed with patience. I will definitely be making another Morton attempt in the future!

Not for me. Couldn't get over how unconvincing the main character's marriage setup was. And then to get all the way to the end, reading such a long story, and the ghost's cause of death was ridiculous. No thanks.

A good book, but a little hard to follow in ebook format because of the multiple narrators and voices. I loved the twist, although it reminded me of a similar twist in Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. Kate Morton always delivers an intricately woven, gripping story and this one is no exception.
