3.7 AVERAGE

While I got there there was a thread of connectivity between all the different running storylines, sometimes it felt so thin that I wondered what was the point? I would have like to seen a stronger tie in made there in order for me to care about those stories. It would have helped me be more invested in those characters. But in the end nothing really felt resolved. So 2 stars. It was just ok.

Loved it… Kate Morton is rapidly rising on my list of favorite authors. Moody, atmospheric, and twisty enough to keep you hooked. Clues are given out as morsels until it’s all pieced together into a tasty meal. This is a book that is best slowly savored.

Morton creates such a compelling world and group of characters in this book. I loved the way that everyone’s story wove together. The more I read the more I wanted to know and I wanted to find out the connections between the characters

Book #6 of 2022: The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton

This is my first reading of a Kate Morton novel. I really enjoyed her style. She has a great talent for painting a picture with her words. She shows the reader the emotions she wants to elicit through elegant style and perfect word choice.

The entire novel is told through multiple points of view. I normally hate reading a story in so many deep points of view, but here I have to admit that it worked very well. I was a little annoyed with it at first, but it did serve a purpose and added to the mystery of the whole novel. I was very surprised once I discovered the full truth of the mystery, and normally I am able to guess the ending before I get to it. Here, I was unable to do that.

Not only are there multiple points of view telling the story, but each storyteller lives in a different time period. It is a little jarring for the reader to not only jump Points of View (character) but also time periods. I would always have to back up and reread the beginning of the section to orient myself. Although this took some work, I found it worth the effort when the different storylines tied together in the end. Very beautiful and seamlessly done.

I can’t say the story is appropriate for all ages. There is some talk of spiritualism, Ouija boards, alcohol and drug use, as well as an affair. But I do not feel the author focuses a lot on any of these aspects. The novel is tasteful, and I would approve my teenage daughters to read it.

Now I get to the most difficult part, the ending. Honestly, I disliked the ending at first. I said, “That can’t be the end. There has to be more!” I had to read another book to get over my disappointment.

Hauntingly beautiful. Morton does a great job of tying everything together at the end to make a neat little package, so that's a plus if you're into that type of closure. It's a very engrossing read, really enjoyed it.
