a favourite of mine. it was such a beautifully written narrative of the growing relationship between two women - looking forward to reading more of Szabó’s work

Haunting, intense, and strange. The Door explores the relationship between “servant” Emerence and her employer. The power dynamic between them is messy, complex – it’s Emerence who holds the cards, whose name is repeated on almost every page whereas her employer (the narrator) is mostly referred to as the “lady writer.” Something unexpected, considering the first chapter ends with the words “I killed Emerence.”
The Door reads like a fever dream. I highly recommend it.

This mostly fell flat for me. I found Emerence's nasty attitude and pigheadedness thoroughly irritating and don't understand why Magda even needed her in the first place. You have no kids and work at home yet can't survive without a maid?
