Will flesh out my take further on a reread closer to book club. But as I was watching The Bridge on the River Kwai I thought how interesting it is to watch two people in conflict both be completely wrong at each other. It got much more compelling for me closer to the end, as the national, political, professional obligations develop in nightmarish incompatibility to personal ones. Emerence resists the pull of history and only feels it bodily. But Magda and her life of the mind is powerless to these larger forces. Will keep on chewing for the next several weeks.

Set in Budapest, Hungary. I read this aboard our Danube river cruise last week and thought it was wonderful that some of the places mentioned in the book we were seeing on our tour. Although I didn't exactly relate to the characters, I did find the book engaging and with enough tension to keep me reading. Not to mention that I want to read more about this wonderful country (I loved Budapest, pronounced Budapesht). I loved the grandeur of this city.

“Everything has to be done properly, even death.”

a book about how people who love each other hurt each other. the writing is beautiful
