This book was a surprise. The concept was interesting enough to be a good plot but the mystery added layers of interest. This is an example of people have done th twists before but when it's so well written it feels like a new idea. The main character May has character! She feels like a girl you've met. Her development feels real and nonlinear. The criticism of religious and societal structures are not modern feeling in a good way. They come naturally as May experiences doubt about what she's been taught. The best part for me was the hints of our real world in hers. The way they change some names and ideas just so slightly to get a point across worked so well. Wonderful read, absolutely recommend.
