Great premise and opening scenes. I enjoyed the main characters and their platonic relationship between a male and female lead was very refreshing. The villain of this volume was fairly flat and 2-dimensional but with several other characters being well developed and introducing the concept of the virus, maybe a mustache-twirling bad guy is just fine.

I read this a week ago and can't put my finger on why but something about the ending just left a lot to be desired. The "what happens next?!" -iness is strong and kind of off-putting. I might check out future issues but hold off on another full volume.

Gruesome graphics, be warned! But, the premise is really interesting. Basically, beauty is an STD that people have been contracting... on purpose. It makes your skin flawless, your hair thick and beautiful, and, well, you get it. BUT, as you'll see, the cost of beauty is really not worth it.

I'm grabbing volume 2 as we speak.

Read this review at my blog Wonderless Reviews

I received an ARC of this from Netgalley and the Publishers in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my god. Oh my GOD. OH MY GOD!!!!!

Where do I even start? I'm still trying to process everything that happened.

To be honest, the cover art was what captured my attention. It was absolutely stunning, as was the art throughout the entire volume. I just had to check it out and see what it was about and I am so glad I did. This was so incredibly captivating and it had so many elements: suspense, drama, horror and humor. It was such a great balance, so many crazy things where happening and then there would be a perfect one liner or scene that made you laugh out loud. The humor did not take away from the intensity, it was placed perfectly.

The Beauty is about a new sexually transmitted disease that makes the person infected turn stunningly beautiful. Everyone, besides the Anti-Beauty group, thinks this disease is amazing and tries to come in contact with it. What everyone doesn't expect is for The Beauty to start killing everyone in an extremely brutal way.

This volume is centered around a man named Drew, who is a detective, called to investigate the first victim who died from the beauty, he's joined by his partner Kara and together they try and work out what's happening. I can't even put in words how much I loved Kara, she was such an incredibly strong female character. She was so badass, but she was also incredibly human. I'm getting emotional just typing this. I loved her a lot. I feel like female characters don't always have the best representation in comics, but this was not the case here. I also adored Kara and Drew's friendship. Friendship dynamics are SO important to me and The Beauty didn't disappoint.

Certain spoiler-ish and intense events develop and Drew and Kara are more invested than ever in trying to learn more about the beauty disease and if there's a cure. They team up with a variety of people who are trying to get the cure out there. Not everyone wants the beauty to be cured though and will do everything possible to make sure Drew and Kara don't get their hands on the cure.

I love the issues that are brought up in this comic. Society puts such pressure on people to be this unrealistic standard of 'beautiful' that if this disease was real - people probably would try and contract it. I feel like it does a great job portraying how these unrealistic beauty standards forced upon us are so dangerous and they could and have seriously hurt people. The other issue I appreciated was how some big pharmaceutical companies care more about money than helping people.

The only issue I had was the ending. I feel it was a touch anti-climatic and abrupt. I was also confused by the skull mask character. However, it wasn't a huge deal and didn't take anything away from the actual story. The fate of one character upset me too because I became extremely attached to them.

This was fast paced and so addicting, I couldn't put it down and read the entire volume in one sitting. I highly recommend this if you're a fan of beautiful art and great storytelling. I feel like I'm forgetting to say something because my mind is such a mess from the sheer genius and beauty of this comic. The issues are available individually here. GO CHECK IT OUT NOW!

'The Beauty, Vol. 1' by Jeremy Haun and Jason A Hurley takes our obsession with beauty and makes a pretty interesting story out of it.

Where this story takes place, there is a contagious sexually transmitted disease. The side effects are immediate and visible. Along with some cold symptoms, the carrier becomes much more beautiful or handsome. People choose to contract the disease in order to be more physically attractive.

When a person with Beauty dies a horrible death on mass transit, two cops take the case. There are people who oppose a sexually transmitted disease or prey on the infected, so there are many possible suspects. There is another possibility. It turns out there are more side effects that happen over a longer period of time, but those who know this have kept it quiet.

It's a pretty good premise. That people would willingly infect themselves to become beautiful is something I could see happening. That others would oppose the beautiful because of how they achieved their looks is also believable. I liked this story and it's art.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Image Comics, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

The concept - a "desirable" STD - was interesting and the art was nice. The overall plot was pretty predictable though, which is where the star is lost.

Kind of slow at first, and I didn't read it for a few weeks, but the last three issues were EPIC. Can't wait for the next volume.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE NETGALLEY FOR THIS REVIEW COPY IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW

"If contracting an STD would make you pretty, would you get yourself infected?

I actually thought of whether I would do it, if I was in the same situation. Would I sacrifice my personal health, just for the sake of being pretty? Probably not.

This graphic novel made me think. It made me think of how realistic it is, that most people would trade their health in exchange for being physically attractive. But that wasn't the only thing I thought about. I also thought a lot about men's greed, and how people often feed on other's weakness for their personal gain. This should that perfectly.

I also have to say that Beauty has one of the best female heroines I have read about. I really liked Vaughn. She is one of those kickass characters that wasn't trying too hard.

Anyways, I really, really recommend this to everyone. It sucks that I have to wait to know what happens next, because this book ended in a fucking cliffie.

Thanks guys. Thanks!
