Even better than the previous book. Like with The Witness for the Dead, this is somewhat episodic in nature while also having multiple ongoing plots that (mostly) link together, and I found the execution much more successful this time around. Perhaps because I enjoyed the mystery element more, but also because the characters all really came to life: the narration is often dry and straightforward because that is how Celahar reads, and yet his griefs, insecurities, and wants were explored in a way that brought new light to much of his behavior. I still find some of the narrative choices surrounding the plot beats to be odd, but this series centers more on the characters than anything, and I loved the new depth to Celahar's relationships. And the romance? The slow burn? There's just something to genuine about it. IƤna Pel-Thenhior for the win.

But really: when does book three release???

The way that all the cases weave together, some related via the plot and others thematically, makes this novella feel incredibly well crafted. The worldbuuilding is rich , and there is something satisfying about reading about a kind, competent person helping others. Despite the sometimes grim subject matter, the book feels cozy.

I don't know if this book is for everyone, but it is for ME! The vibes are immaculate, the mysteries are cool, and the ending is interesting. What's gonna happen next!! I love this series so much, and my boy Thara Celehar is everything to me ;_;
