I'm always worried that I'll pick up one of Kelley's short stories and be disappointed. It's never the case though so I don't know why I wait so long to read them! I found that this one added some bits and pieces to the story without being a need to read short story. Kelley's always been good at this. This time we get to see more of what Gabriel is thinking and it makes me want the last book right away!

More Gabriel + more Patrick + very little if any Ricky = perfection.

I was a bit of a fish out of water in this story, at least for a bit, since I've not read any of the novels in this series (though that's about to change, I now have books one and two). Probably not the best place to start the series. This apparently occurs between books three and four, so you might want to read 1-3 before this novella.

The characters are interesting, though Gabriel is a little tough to like at times. I did like it enough that I want to know more, especially about Patrick.

Edited to add: I have now read books 1-3, although read is an understatement, I pretty much devoured them in the last few days. I like Gabriel a lot more now, and Patrick a lot less, haha. But I strongly suggest reading the whole series before reading this novella. You won't be sorry you did!

REREAD 2021

Not sure if I have anything new to say from my last read. I stand by everything I said in the original review, as well as the rating.
It's a fun and entertaining book, but that's about it. It doesn't do much for me either way, which is a strange feeling from a book by my favorite author, but the truth. So a 3/5 star rating it it.
If that makes sense?
--------------------------
Almost 3.5/5 stars, but not quite.

I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from this book, as it was told from Gabriel's POV and so far we've mostly stayed with Liv. It was a pleasant surprise, though.

I enjoyed the story, and it had a lot of character development for both Gabriel and Patrick that I'm glad I know going into the rest of the main series.
The story was also interesting, exploring some other points of mythos than we have seen so far in this world.

Not sure what else there is to say. Armstrong's writing is on point and has a nice flow, as always. And the art in this book was nice and fun.
I remember when I first saw the art in one of the Otherworld-books, I wasn't a fan, but it has grown on me and become the art I associate with Armstrong's stories.

Really great story, of Gabriel having a case to interest Olivia, and yeah, really enjoyed being in his and Patrick's heads!

"wriggling into my good graces. which would be so much more productive if I had any."

"it felt like rejection, and his defenses had shot into place. you won't hurt me. I wont let you. i'll hurt you first."

I am a huge fan of urban myths and legends, I even did a speech on them in school. That is why this novella was awesome for me. So seriously awesome. Reason number two why this is awesome is because Gabriel might easily be one of my favourite characters in this, and I have a serious love/hate for Patrick.

This is from Gabriel's point of view, which is interesting because there's only really been few, fleeting moments where we get inside of his head, and I am certainly did appreciate the insight to this character.

This is a must for Cainsville fans.

I honestly did not think I would love this series as much as I do now when I read the first book, but I do. This novella was a great addition to the series. I can't wait for Rituals. Kelley Armstrong is AWESOME.

Arc Provided by Subterranean Press through Netgalley

Release Date: March 31st

The greatest compliment I can give to this novella, is that after being thoroughly pissed of with the way things ended in the third Cainsville novel, I am now _once again _ determined in finishing the series! So, well done! Objective achieved, lol
As to what happens in this novella, obviously I'm not going to spoil it for you guys, but I'll say that the basic plot was extremely interesting... okay, there's ghosts...and other supernatural beings involved.
Patrick, aka Gabriel's... now what have you read?
Have you read the first four books and the anthology "Led Astray" who has some pretty good shorts on Gabriel and his childhood? Because in the case that you haven't, let's just keep things...secret. Okay?
So, I was talking about Patrick who is a writer amongst other things... Olivia would probably use a much more colourful language about the guy!*snort*
Patrick decides to get more involved in Gabriel's life, and of course things don't go as they probably should. A big mess ensues. Gabriel and Olivia's relationship is still on the mend, and people are getting lost. In more ways than one...
Now if you're wondering, after all my blabbering, if you can read this novella without reading the previous stories, the answer is yes.
Of course by doing so, you'll be losing more than half of the "fun" :)

Quick thoughts

Love visiting old friends - some real insight into Gabriel's personality, thoughts, and challenges. Definitely up for more of her E-books. If you like supernatural, you will like Armstrong, but this would be hard to follow without reading any of the other Cainsville books.
