The original Dune and Dune Messiah were both page turners for me. Children of Dune, while interesting, just did not catch me in the way the previous two books did. Lots of chapters with not much going on. The end was satisfying but there was far too long of a stretch of the story that just dragged before those final 20 pages or so.

SpoilerI hated the twist with The Preacher and thought it was obvious.

Sequels are tend to be problematic and often fall short. This book was a chore to get through and shouldn't have been. I'm disappointed that the end of the original book trilogy was so lackluster given how great Dune is but sometimes creators only have one great work in them.

Some nice new twists, lots of plans within plans within plans type things in the middle of the book got repetitive

The plot isn't quite as convoluted as Messiah, but the meat of this story is more political machinations and outmaneuvering future threats.

And then things pick up and get weird.

This story is a compelling account of what everyone stands to inherit from Paul's actions in Dune, from his children to his followers to the planet itself.

Totally off the rails at this point. Much less compelling to read about the messianic white saviors when they actually are as omniscient as they need people to believe. Anime levels of one-up-manship with new kinds of Fremen appearing that are always one notch more secret and more truly traditional than the last.
