The writing is very atmospheric, but the plot is largely driven by these characters being ridiculously stupid. Like they make every decision with absolutely no forethought.
I also felt like this could have read as a historical fiction, but both of the time periods were so indistinct that they could be interchangeable with pretty much any time period.

What a spectacular, atmospheric read!

We all know I’m a mood reader, so despite getting this a year ago in my @bookofthemonth box, it took me until today to pick it up and truly dive in. I’d made a few half-hearted attempts last year, but I have learned that I can’t force a book, it has to arrive in my hands at the right moment.

And oh did it ever.

This is the perfect “spooky season” read in that it has a family curse, deeply atmospheric writing, and an air of “otherworldliness.” Once I got into this book, there was no putting it down. I devoured it right up to the very last page. I read this in one day.

I fell in love with June, Gran, Birdie, Mason, Eamon, and Annie. The way this story unfolded was entirely unpredictable to me, and certainly requires a little suspension of disbelief (but only in the best way). It’s complex, in that there are multiple timelines to keep track of and a long-standing curse over the Farrow women.

There was a moment, very near the end, where I literally gasp-sobbed and had to sit with the book for a moment before I finished.

I loved this story so, so much.  I equally adored “Spells For Forgetting,” so it’s clear that Young is a new favorite author of mine.

This gives me “spooky Gilmore Girls” vibes, to an extent.

Love, love, love.  It’s going on the “special” shelf!

I love time travel, and this put a non-traditional spin on it. To me it felt sort of like a combo of Outlander and The Time Traveler’s Wife. The writing pulled me into the feelings and memories of the main character and had me on edge for her to find her happy ending.
