wspaniały język, klimat i ciekawe wykorzystanie wątku muzycznego

3.5 stars — kinda like “evelyn hugo” but fewer husbands and set in brazil

4,5/5 gwiazdek.

I was completely transported to Brazil while reading this book and I couldn't stop watching videos of Carmen Miranda after I finished it. While the setting, the music, the dancing, and the costumes are all depicted beautifully in this book, the friendship between Dores and Graca is what really captivated me. It was so fascinating to watch them grow up and see the changing dynamics in their relationship. I really felt for every character in this book. However, I took a star off because the writing was a little ramble, this book could have been way shorter.

This is a powerfully and beautifully written novel about the unexpected friendship between a Sugar Cane Plantation Owner's daughter and one of the servants. The friendship, relationship, and life that Dores and Graza share is so eloquently written. From their preteen years through Graza's untimely death in their late twenties. These two have quite the amazing life. Several other amazing and unique characters play roles in this story. I truly enjoyed learning about Samba and life in Brazil. Life in Hollywood for a foreign star also seemed quite interesting in the time. Told from Dores's point of view in her old age, this book is like a beautiful memory. Dores spares nothing in her recounting of her and Graza's life. We see the good, the bad, and the frowned upon things that these girls did. They lived incredible lives.

The entire novel was a page-turner. The way in which the author so beautifully captures relationships between two girls throughout their (short) lives and the tough choices is truly something to be admired. The novel goes back and forth from present- day Dores telling us the way things panned out for the band to the story of how they got there. There is so much grief and loneliness in her voice. From the very beginning, the readers know the unfortunate fate that the band's lead singer faced yet the intricate way in which Frances de Pontes Peebles writes the story propels the reader forward and all the way to the very end.
The characters were so intricate and complex, they were relatable. Their emotions are so easily felt- every trace of love, jealousy and frustration jumps from the page straight to the audience. Watching the girls grow up together and struggle their way to success allowed the readers to really understand each one of them and understand what they do and why. Both of them have their flaws and just because Dores is narrating the story, we see a lot more of Graca's flaws but neither character is flawless. The way in which both characters are flawed make them that much more relatable to the audience.
