stunningly beautiful writing and such a great plot idea and i loved the setting both time and places but i also always felt disconnected from all the character.

This book was such a joy and delight I didn’t want it to end. Beautifully crafted, warm and lyrical, dramatic and dark - just like the music which soars through it. I absolutely cannot wait for this author to write again and so glad I picked up on the review.

This book was alright. The writing was decent but the storyline really stalled for me. I didn’t feel like the struggles they were facing were interesting. But maybe because I know real musicians. Haha! I was bored 3/4 way through and just wanted it to end.

I love a book about female friendships, and I also love complicated female characters. This book has both of those, and it was beautifully written. A gem.

"On that night and many after it, [she] made me realize that I, too, could be wanted. That the desires I felt could be shared and even reciprocated; that they did not have to be locked away to wither inside myself. It was a frightening discovery at first, but I wasn't afraid for long."

“If remembering tells us who we are, then forgetting keeps us sane. If we recalled every song we’d ever heard, every touch we’d ever felt, every pain no matter how small, every sadness no matter how petty, every joy no matter how selfish, we could surely lose our minds.”

Such an alluring, delicate, heart-wrenching, funny, sweet, real "perfection" of a book. So many little moments about music just hit me right where they are meant to. Might become a favorite of mine. Definitely a favorite of 2018.

“What we see in the world depends so much on who we are at the moment of seeing.”

An absolutely perfect novel. The writing in this book is so warm and descriptive that you feel part of it from the first page. In 1930s Brazil young Dores is working in the kitchen of a sugar plantation when Graça’s family buys the home. The girls form a lifelong friendship that blossoms when they discover a love of music.

The story follows them through their lives and their rise to stardom as a Samba band. The writing is so incredibly vivid and emotional that I felt I could close my eyes and hear the songs, feel the warmth from the beaches. I completely loved this book.

Fans of Daisy Jones and the Six, I think you would enjoy this one.
