Lovely written. I love History so this book just captivated me from the beginning to end.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved that they combined real history with Cleopatra and Marc Antony into the story. The book was fast paced, and while I wasn't on the edge of my seat the entire book, it kept me engaged and I enjoyed it. Anne Rice writes very well, and while she is descriptive, I don't feel like she is long winded. The only trouble that I have with this book is that it leaves with a bit of a cliff hanger, it says at the end of the book that the adventures of Ramsey's the Damned will continue, but as far as I'm aware Anne Rice didn't write a sequel to this book. I am excited to start on Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles series now.

This was my first Ann Rice book, I have no idea why I haven't read any of her work before. This one caught my eye, a beat up little paperback on a packed shelf at NY Housing Works. $3? I figured, 'hey might as well try her out' and I'm glad I did. The story had few slow spots, lots of chase, and plenty of 'what will he do now?' There was an element of unpredictability with Ramses and Elliott, a lot of characters I've encountered in the past have had such linear patterns. I could not wait for them to off Henry, oh my god he is such a hedonistic idiot. Cleopatra was a loose cannon. I feel like Julie was 'modern' thinking for the early 1910s but otherwise very dependent on Ramses.
The ending was alright, and overall I enjoyed the book.

Classic Anne Rice: pulpy and fun for about fifty pages; then it devolves into a boring slog populated by insane, unlikeable characters. Now with added racism! WHY.
