A classic children's read. It's a story of a little girl called Fern, her pig Wilbur and Wilburs friend Charlotte a spider. A charming children's book, with beautiful illustrations, enjoyed as an adult, just as wonderful as when I read it as a child. Fab stuff.

Not having grown up in the anglophone world, this was never part of the bedtime rotation for me. However, I now remember watching one of the newer movies and really liking it when I was about six.
That much for a child’s perspective.
As an adult, I really appreciate the complexity of the story – it takes its young readers seriously instead of falling into a trap of preachy morality and analogy. None of the usual animal stereotypes apply; if anything, the humans in this story are less complex than the animals. Probably exacerbated by the quite rigid gender roles they seem to operate under.
I wasn’t a big fan of Fern’s development, her just completely losing interest in Wilbur seemed uncharacteristic. But I guess that too is part of life – Friends come and go.

Decided to read this book after Kak Raya recommended it to me and I regret nothing. Starting my 2024 anew with Charlotte's Web is definitely my best choice today. The book itself was quite short, simple, but it echoes such heartwarming resolution for Wilbur and Charlotte (and of course, her future generations). I cried so much. This book reminds me for the nth time that children's books will never fail me. Very very very recommended.

A wholesome yet elegant book that had me sobbing, which is extremely impressive to me, considering how short and straightforward it was. It's incredibly effective at what it sets out to do, doesn't matter if you are an adult now, just go read it. I have nothing more to say, it is simply perfect, and its beloved status as a classic is well deserved.
