This book has been in my shelf for years. Although I decided to read it after having seen the musical, the two are vastly different but I really enjoyed the book. It's a lot darker and more political than the musical.

The plot is incredibly interesting and a great take on the Wicked Witch of the West. I found this book challenging to read because of some created words as well as because of the different political factions. There is much more darkness than I anticipated. Overall, I enjoyed it and look forward to reading the next one.

I was shocked by how different the book is than the play so if you’re expecting the play, this is not it.

I enjoyed the overall plot even if it's waaaay darker than I expected and what I usually read.
I liked that I didn't know where the story was going but I don't really have this sense of satisfaction after finish it.
Several dark parts were really unnecessary and the same goes for the confusionary sex scenes.
Instead of those, I wish we got more from the characters and a better distribution of the plot, a lot of things felt really rushed at the end.

I did like this book, I will say the first half was better than the second half (more engaging). I thought Elphaba could be very funny, and the book was way more obviously queer than the movie. I don't know if I was quite sold on her villain arc, particularly in the last bit of the book. Also pretty much every character of color was murdered. I did overall like it though, I recommend it as long as you understand it's VERY different from the movie (I haven't seen the musical yet) and definitely is not kid-friendly, and as long as you understand that while this book is queerer than the movie, it was also published in 1995.
