Having finally read some Sherlock Holmes (not including the time I was read a Study in Scarlet to and barely paid any attention) I can say that I really understand why these stories are so beloved. I think that a lot of adaptations of the story seem to miss that the great joy of reading Sherlock is to have their really odd little episodic mysteries, that often really have nothing to do with each other besides being solved by Holmes and Watson. The tone is also not the sort of noir detective tone that a lot of adaptations take. Really Holmes in the book is a very nice fellow, if a bit haughty and brusque. And though a lot of the mysteries do involve some horrible crimes, the tone never makes you feel like you're experiencing something very grim. Doyle was a genius of tone and though one feels suspense and thrills, I never actually was truly struck by a sense of grimness.

Really this book has convinced me of two things. One. I need to read more Sherlock Holmes. And two, wow there are very few good adaptations of Sherlock Holmes. Weirdly enough, I think Scooby Doo matches the tone better than most Sherlock adaptations. As well as the sense of fun of trying to solving a mystery.

I loved all of the short stories! The author did a great job with how Sherlock connected the dots! For me personally, there just wasn't enough suspense in most of the stories.

Another great classic read. A great collection of stories that Sherlock Holmes and Watson work together to uncover. With the power of observation, deduction, logic, and excluding the impossible they always find the truth.

I can tell how these stories influenced so many that we've read since they're publishing dates, and how Sherlock himself is a force and an interesting character to follow and learn from. That said, I was mostly bored listening to these stories, and some you could see the endings coming from a mile away.

while not every short stort is as good as the rest, my over-all immersion into the stories and mysteries is one of my favourite reading experiences to date.
