The tension keeps rising and rising throughout this book, as the characters live this lavish lifestyle, for which the narrator judges them immensely, and we, the readers, can't help but feel that somehow it all must come crashing down because it cannot be sustained.

I thought that aspect of it was really well done, but that said, I didn't love this, but maybe that's because the narrator really dislikes so many of the people he meets (and I get it, that's kind of the point).

I do not understand why this is an American classic. Short, well written, but I don'  like a "Romeo and Juliet" type of love story or so many unlikable characters.

My very first time reading The Great Gatsby!

I can't believe I managed to avoid spoilers for a book that's literally 100 years old, but I somehow did it. I knew there was a car accident and main character death, but I always assumed that Daisy crashed a car and died

So imagine my shock when it turned out that Daisy ran over and killed a woman, and GOT AWAY WITH IT?! Because Gatsby took the blame 😧

And then imagine my shock when Gatsby DIES?! I HAD NO IDEA HE WAS GONNA DIE!! I was totally freaking out.

This was so good, and it makes me mad that I never read it in school because I would’ve loved to have class discussions on it!

“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

A cautionary tale about why you should never trust rich people.

The characters are iconic and frustratingly shallow. I hated every single one of them and wanted them all to die, but I’m pretty sure that’s the point.

The plot is more vibes and symbolism than action. Not a lot happens, but when shit hits the fan, it’s a car crash you can’t look away from.
