The Great Gatsby is a beautifully written glimpse into the opulence and turbulence of a group of people who come from little or extreme wealth in the early 1920s.

Nick, through who we are told our story, has a humble background and goes to New York City where he connects with his cousin, Daisy, who has only known extreme wealth. He takes up residence in a bungalow next to the enigmatic Jay Gatsby, who seems to want for not—throwing extravagant and widely attended parties at his mansion, driving his swanky Rolls Royce. As Nick gets embroiled in Gatsby’s life, he tries to tease out who exactly is Gatsby, and gets swept up in the events that unfold between Daisy and Gatsby.

With vivid, lyrical imagery, Fitzgerald draws you into this world that shines brilliantly, but is not gold—I felt euphoric reading about the parties, melancholic as we uncover deep pining. A classic I have read several times and will undoubtably read again.

In the book we read Nick Carraway’s recollection of a summer spent with Jay Gatsby, his neighbor with the enormous house who hosts ridiculously big parties. We follow him as we meet all sorts of dramatic, shallow, selfish people.

This summary might sound unpleasent but it was just a very interesting read. The way these people are described is very well done (although I was familiar with the film), but basically all of them were annoying and just awful people.
