This is a real period piece and does a great job recreating the mood of London in the early 1960s. However, the plot is not the easiest to follow and I got more enjoyment from subsequent books by this author.

I found this book very gripping, it kept me guessing till the end, and it had some exciting twists. I definitely want to read more of these cold war era novels. It had a bit of a dissapointing ending imo, feeling like it finished too soon, with everything being cleared up and explained away scooby-doo style.
Just unfortunate the dated writing style. It was published in 1962, but ive read earlier books with less sexist writing.

I just couldn't get into this book! Perhaps because it's not a genre I usually read, or maybe I found the heavy first person narrative off-putting? All I know is: when you groan with disappointment when you pick up a book to continue reading it, you need to give up - it's not worth wasting your time!
