Was this a total rip off of Kiera Cass’s The Selection? Absolutely. But I was also just a good time.
The main character was still a poor musician. She meets the prince early. They become friends when he asks her to give her opinion about the other girls in the competition. She is there by “accident.” Her best friend in the palace was in a relationship with a guard. There is a mean girl stirring everything up. It’s almost like the author didn’t try to personally go out of the way to differentiate the characters and their personalities from The Selection series. But because I love the Selection, I’m willing to let it slide (if not a bit conflicted about it).
I did like how it had more of a modern twist and included fae. Although I don’t think the world was fully fleshed out (the Shimmer??), it was still interesting to read about with the reality TV elementary. The curse with the Queen at the end was also really exciting and different, which I appreciated! I wish we had gotten to see the relationship between the two leads bloom a little more, as I felt like there wasn’t enough there by the time the climax happened.

This was literally just The Selection if it took place in a less-developed ACOTAR universe

My immediate thought after finishing The Princess Game was how much it reminded me of The Selection series by Kiera Cass—only this time with magic, fae courts, and a definite NA feel (yes, there’s a bit of spice later on). Since I’m a big fan of The Selection trilogy, I enjoyed this book almost as much.
I really enjoyed the world Lyra Vincent created, blending our human world with a magical fae realm. The romance kept me hooked, and I enjoyed the characters—including the side ones—though I do wish we’d gotten to know some of them better. Maybe we’ll learn more in the other standalones planned for this series. (I’m especially intrigued by a certain Winter Prince *wink wink*)
One of my favorite parts was the way the author described the fae Autumn Court. I’m a sucker for beautiful descriptions, and this was so expertly depicted I could almost feel the magic and wonder seeping through the pages.
The only thing that didn’t work for me was the ending, but only because it felt rushed. The last 15–20% of the book was packed with so much action and so many twists, all being resolved in a matter of minutes, that it became a little overwhelming. I couldn’t help but wish the story had been stretched into a duology—or even a trilogy. There was so much potential for deeper exploration, and I would’ve loved to linger in this world with these characters a little longer instead of feeling like everything was wrapped up in a flash, almost unrealistically.
That being said, this book was still a great read, and I had a lot of fun with it. I’ll definitely be exploring more of Lyra Vincent’s work in the future!

This book was like a fantasy mix between The Bachelor and The Hunger Games. I typically don’t read fantasy books, but this one was pretty good. The ending was very interesting and unexpected. The cliffhanger endings of most of the chapters made me want to keep reading.
This was quick and fun read! It was a little predictable and the dialogue was cheesy at times especially with the amount of times "little miss girl next door" was used but the story still kept me intrigued.
