I really tried to get into this book, but I found myself skimming through so much of it just to get to any dialogue or plot that would drive the story forward. The MC has almost no personality, and the FMC isvery late in the book revealed to be a virgin and a murderer.

The selection ma fatato.

First off, I want to state that this was a very different take on faerie than I thought it would be and it had a lot of aspects to it that I really enjoyed. The way the author portrayed the main character and all her trauma in her life was done tastefully and it felt believable to me. Also the smuttier scenes didn't seem repetitive which is always nice and they didn't feel rushed.
Personally, I wasn't satisfied with world building even though the overall story was good. I was excited to hear about the Autumn court (I've read a lot of fae themed books that were focused on the winter court recently), but I feel like in the realm of fae, Lyra's version was a bit lighter than I was interested in reading at the time. I'm not saying the world is bad or anything, I just wanted more magic, more otherworldlyness than I got and that's why I rated the book the way I have.
Thank you for the lovely story Lyra, I look forward to reading more books by you.

Become the next Princess of the Autumn Court! Thirty women will have the chance to vie for the prince’s heart and the crown in this new adult version of “The Selection” + The Bachelor with some Faeries mixed in for extra magic.
As someone who loved “The Selection” when I read it many moons ago, I jumped on this magical version of the YA book. If you have read any of my reviews before, you know how much I hate blind hatred fueled by overgeneralizations. If I had one critique for “The Princess Game”, this beginning would be it. The humans either idolize or hate the Fae, and the Fae seem to behave the same way. This was not entirely what I would describe as enemies-to-lovers, but it was in that realm. I enjoyed that the FMC was willing to admit that her overgeneralized ideas were inaccurate when it was relevant for growth.
One thing I enjoyed as I was reading “The Princess Game” was the friends that the FMC made. The magic was less interesting than I expected, but the plot itself was well done. I had honestly expected more creativity put into the world-building, but it did stick to the traditional fantasy and folklore traditions associated with the Fae. I felt that Lyra Vincent did a good job honoring this tradition with a fun, modern twist. There was also a bit of mental health representation through some of the traumatic symptoms experienced by the FMC. While I would have liked more background, the pacing of the story was fitting and consistent.
Read if you want a quick, and enjoyable KU read full of magic, romance, women willing to do anything for the throne, and found family!
Favorite Quotes:
“I … think … family is what you make it,” I say hesitantly. “It isn’t always about blood. It’s the people you love. The people you would do anything for.”
“But did it occur to you that perhaps the amount of light I need in my life is directly related to the amount of darkness I’m constantly trying to obliterate?”
“You have shit to deal with but you keep hiding.”
